Description

The Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) is a leader on the Development team in the Office of Advancement at William & Mary and has responsibilities for both the university and the William & Mary Foundation.

The Executive Director is responsible for building a dynamic CFR Program that can secure an increasing level of support for institutional priorities; this includes strategic portfolio development and management, strategic planning and program management. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Development for Campus Initiatives, the Executive Director will work strategically with university leadership and constituent programs to successfully meet corporate and foundation annual goals as well as the goals of a near future capital campaign.

The Executive Director develops and manages key corporate and foundation relationships to secure gifts for the university and maintains a high level of activity with regard to the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of corporate and foundation prospects and donors, utilizing this pace of activity as an example for direct reports to follow. The Executive Director sets annual goals for each member of the CFR team, including specific targets for lead identification, contacts, proposal and other collateral development, cultivation and stewardship. The Executive Director mentors and trains direct reports to incorporate successful practices in their collaboration with faculty, administrators, and principal investigators. They also assess the strategies in place for corporate and foundation prospects, to ensure distribution of necessary follow-up reports and letters and to direct the coordination of appropriate gift announcements.

The successful Executive Director will be a proactive and collaborative member of this dynamic development team and a champion for diversity and equity as William & Mary builds on its success and continues planning for its next campaign. This position is based in Williamsburg and is expected to work in the office on campus, eligible to work remotely up to two days per week.


Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.
  • Significant experience negotiating corporate and foundation partnerships, preferably in an academic setting, in a large non-profit organization, or in a related and relevant corporate or foundation setting. (typically, 6+ years).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and initiate relationships with philanthropic leaders in the business and foundation community as well as the ability to work with deans, faculty and senior administrators on complex research and proposals.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to understand complex research and related application with proven ability for translation into dynamic corporate and foundation proposals and demonstrated analytical, research, written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regionally and nationally as required and to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well collaboratively with team members and demonstrates initiative, creativity, sound judgement and discretion, and maintain productive professional relationships.
  • Significant organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently to meet aggressive goals and deadlines
  • Fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities.

Preferred:

  • An Advanced Degree (preferably a Master’s degree) in a related field
  • Strategic vision to create and manage the Corporate and Foundation Relations team to harness the potential of the larger community toward engagement and philanthropic goals.
  • Extensive experience negotiating successful corporate and foundation partnerships, preferably in an academic setting, in a large non-profit organization, or in a related and relevant corporate or foundation setting (typically 8+ years).
  • Extensive and progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising or a related field (typically 8+ years).
  • Extensive experience partnering with research teams and grant-giving organizations (typically 8+ years).
  • Significant management experience leading a corporate and/or foundation program (typically 6+ years).
  • Experience in a comprehensive campaign in a higher ed setting (typically 6 years).
