The Putney School, an independent boarding and day school for grades 9-12 located in southeastern Vermont, has been a model of progressive education since it was founded in 1935 by Carmelita Hinton, a prominent leader in implementing John Dewey’s progressive learning ideals. The school, situated on a 500-acre working dairy farm, integrates classical academic courses with a practical work program, outdoor activities and the performing and visual arts. With 220 students from the U.S. and abroad--including China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and South Korea--The Putney School encourages stewardship of the environment, social consciousness and global awareness. Putney employs approximately 47 staff/administrators and 35 full-time and 24 part-time faculty members. The school provides a full benefits package.
