Company Profile

Company Overview

St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children is committed to improving the health and quality of life for children and families with special needs. St. Mary’s Healthcare System is one of only a handful of organizations around the country that is dedicated to providing intensive rehabilitation, specialized care, and education to children with special needs and life-limiting conditions. Founded in 1870 in New York City, St. Mary’s is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that has evolved into a national leader of care for children with complex medical needs and is setting a standard with our new medical centers of excellence.

Following hospitalizations in acute care facilities for complications from premature birth, illness, and injury, or when special services are needed, children and their families come to St. Mary’s to receive care, learn to manage their illness or injury, and achieve a better quality of life. As the largest provider of long-term care for children with complex medical conditions in New York State and one of the nation’s leading providers of pediatric post-acute care, St. Mary’s provides a continuum of care, treating children throughout the metropolitan area through a network of inpatient, home care and community programs and services, setting a standard of excellence in pediatric healthcare.

Ongoing advances in medicine, technology, and training are helping children survive illness and injury thought impossible just a decade ago. These advances have helped to create an emerging population of children with medically complex conditions who require ongoing specialized care and rehabilitation throughout their lifetime. These are St. Mary’s Kids.

According to a recent study by Children’s Hospital Association, this population is growing at a rate of 5% annually – far outpacing the growth rate of children overall. As the number of children with special needs continues to grow, so too does the demand for St. Mary’s services. St. Mary’s children are challenged by a broad spectrum of conditions, including chronic illness, serious injury, complications of premature birth, post-surgical programs (including transplant), cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, severe asthma, congenital heart disease, neurological, respiratory, orthopedic disorders, and HIV/AIDS. These conditions often require long-term, complex, interdisciplinary care from a team of trained pediatric specialists, including physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, speech, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, social workers and others.

St. Mary’s considers the patient to be both the child as well as his or her family. Through a family-centered approach to care, we strive to keep families actively involved in care planning and treatments to help them better manage their child’s condition. St. Mary’s treats 2,000 children each day in the New York metropolitan region and beyond through our family-centered inpatient, home care, and community programs. Our inpatient facility is located in Bayside, Queens and our home care and community programs are based in New Hyde Park and Roslyn, New York.
