Company Overview
Stetson University is the oldest and most prestigious private university in Florida with more than 4,000 students from around the nation and the world. Stetson has a rich tradition of academic excellence that includes the arts and sciences, business, music and law. Student to faculty ratios are low giving students a personalized and focused educational experience that develops their problem-solving and leadership abilities - an approach to learning valued by employers and one that allows students to find their passion while developing core life skills necessary to be significant in an ever-changing world. Stetson students go on to lead lives of significance in their community and the world.
The business of Stetson University is to prepare today’s students for a future we can anticipate but cannot know. In the face of inevitable uncertainty and change, we seek to be unbound by existing practice and supposition, driven by possibility rather than paralyzed by doubt.
Stetson men and women are “shapers” of history. They gain the confidence to be so by their many opportunities for academic research, study and practical experience working with faculty, community mentors and internships. They learn to look beyond possibilities and not see limitations. They are leaders by example and by training. They are ready for the daunting challenges of today and able to set a collective course of action for a better tomorrow.
Outstanding Qualities
Leadership for Life. Stetson men and women hold positions of significance at innovative businesses both large and small; they sing at the New York Metropolitan Opera and produce Broadway shows; they volunteer at community service organizations; they work for governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) providing vital services to people around the globe. They are clerics and teachers, performers and musicians, professors and administrators, counselors and advisors, inventors and entrepreneurs. They use their Stetson education to foster human compassion and social understanding while generating economic well being. They are Stetson’s greatest legacy.
Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. Stetson is a classic example of an institution deeply rooted in the study of the liberal arts and sciences, merged with opportunities for professional studies. Whether it be business, music or teacher education, Stetson students speak and write well across the curriculum and have the opportunity to leave college well prepared to join the ranks in the professions or in graduate study.
Relevant Research. All students, regardless of discipline, must complete a senior research project that demonstrates their written and oral communication skills. This culminating experience brings together the threads of their education in a holistic project-based experience. In addition, students have the opportunity to work along side faculty and alumni doing significant research throughout the year and in a more focused way during the summer.
Community Engagement. The university supports an array programs and experiences to insure that students understand the importance of making a difference in the community. All students participate in a junior seminar focused on community engagement and social justice. Stetson is one of 24 colleges across the country chosen to participate in the Bonner Program that encourages and rewards community service. Further, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recognized this emphasis on community engagement by classifying Stetson in its Community Engagement category.
Student Success Model. Success means that Stetson men and women complete all the goals they have set for themselves. The university does this by emphasizing the following:
• Bridge components of the student learning experience -- academics, athletics, campus life and student employment -- in an integrative learning and student development environment.
• Collaborate with campus partners to design and implement experiences whose meaning and impact lasts long after their official conclusion. These include internships, community-based learning and mentored research.
• Use a variety of methods including advising, accommodation, academic and career coaching, and tutoring, to engage and reinforce the college experience.
Values-based Education. Stetson values the development of the whole person and is committed to building lifelong connections with the larger world through Personal Growth, Intellectual Development, and Global Citizenship. To that end, the University fosters policies, practices, and modes of inquiry to support and explore these values areas.
