Less than two weeks after Fiscal Year 2009 began, Hurricane Ike made landfall on Galveston Island, severely damaging the UTMB campus and its home community with storm surge flooding. Despite the great challenges posed by Ike, an FY 2009 year-end assessment reveals a healthy, active, strong UTMB that is headed toward a bright future.

*Post-Hurricane Ike Recovery: Clinics began reopening two days after storm. Inpatient OB/Gyn services available October 13, 2008. John Sealy Hospital reopened January 5, 2009, and now has over 400 beds. The Emergency Department reopened August 1, 2009 as a Level III Trauma Center; goal of restoring Level I Trauma Center designation in 2010.
