Company Overview

Wartburg College is a selective liberal arts college of the Lutheran church (ELCA), internationally recognized for community engagement. It is dedicated to challenging and nurturing students for lives of leadership and service as a spirited expression of their faith and learning. The college was founded in 1852. Wartburg is listed among The Best Midwestern Colleges in The Princeton Review, one of 34 colleges in the central United States profiled in Colleges of Distinction, based on engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes, and is among 200 schools in Peterson’s Top Colleges for Science.

FACILITIES
The 118-acre Wartburg campus includes more than 30 buildings, many connected by skyways and covered walkways. Old Main, built in 1880 and renovated in 1986, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The college has opened 12 new facilities since 1990. The most recent are:
• The Science Center (2004), which doubled the number of classrooms and laboratories available for the sciences and mathematics and includes the Platte Observatory on the northwest edge of the campus.
• Saemann Student Center (2004), which includes McCaskey Lyceum, a performance venue utilized by the theatre program and a variety of campus events.
• Walston-Hoover Stadium (2002), an outdoor athletic complex with a FieldTurf playing field and all-weather track.
• The Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center (2007), a $31 million, 200,000 square-foot indoor facility with an arena, multiple courts for a variety of recreational sports, natatorium, and fitness and health centers.

Campaign Wartburg, which concluded in 2006, raised $88 million for the endowment, the Annual Fund, new facilities, and special projects.

Open-access and departmental computing clusters are available to students throughout the campus. Classrooms and residence hall rooms are connected to the campus-wide network, and users can access file servers to distribute assignments, use e-mail, and browse Internet resources, including the library's online public access catalog.

CURRICULUM
The Wartburg Plan of Essential Education is designed to create liberally educated, ethically minded citizens for the 21st century. The plan emphasizes thinking strategies, reasoning skills, fundamental literacies, faith and reflection, health and wellness, and a capstone course. It encompasses inquiry studies courses with a broad range of topics, interdisciplinary course work, and a unique set of interconnected courses. STUDENTS
Wartburg's enrollment has grown from 1,467 in 1997 to a 2010 enrollment of 1,775 including students from 26 states and 46 countries. U.S. students of color and international students comprise 16 percent of the student body. The majority of students come from Iowa with significant numbers also from Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Fifty-five percent of the entering class in 2010 graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school classes, and the average ACT at entrance was 23.5. Of students who list a religious preference, 36 percent are Lutheran.

WAVERLY
A community of 9,000 residents, Waverly is located in northeast Iowa, 20 minutes from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metropolitan area, which has a combined population of more than 150,000. Waverly is known statewide for its progressive businesses and industries and high quality of life. The college and the community are mutually supportive, and Waverly employers have demonstrated a strong commitment to helping spouses of new staff members find suitable employment. A four-lane highway connects Waverly to the Waterloo Airport, which is served by Delta Airlines and offers connections to Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids is a 90-minute drive from Waverly and offers a wider range of airlines, including United, American, and Delta, with connections through Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, and Minneapolis.
