CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER, SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH | YALE UNIVERSITY
The Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), a dynamic and collaborative leader who will serve as the school’s lead fundraiser and a key strategic partner to the Dean. The CAO will provide vision and direction for donor cultivation, engagement, and stewardship; energize and support the school’s development team; foster meaningful connections across campus and among alumni; and play an integral role in advancing the school’s strategic goals as a member of the Dean’s leadership team.
Founded in 1915 by the pioneering public health leader C.-E. A. Winslow, the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) was among the first accredited graduate-level public health programs in the country. Today, YSPH is at the forefront of transforming public health by translating scientific discovery into real-world impact to address the most pressing health challenges facing communities around the globe. As a fully independent school within Yale University, YSPH combines the strength of a world-renowned university with a bold vision for the future of public health. Guided by its strategic vision of Linking Science and Society, YSPH seeks to make public health foundational to thriving communities everywhere.
YSPH’s approximately 150 faculty members rank second amongst R1 schools of public health in both scholarly research index and in grant dollars per faculty member; the school is amongst the top five in all other quantitative metrics, as well. The school offers a range of academic and professional programs, including MPH, MS, and PhD degrees as well as executive education and non-degree programs; and approximately 800 YSPH students each year benefit from an exceptional educational experience that combines rigorous scholarship, cross-disciplinary learning opportunities, and global engagement.
The need for excellence in public health education and research could not be more urgent. Thanks to generous philanthropists, Yale School of Public Health is able to realize its vision and mission through innovative research, learning, and action. The development & alumni affairs unit within YSPH typically comprises ~6 staff, including two direct reports to the CAO; it is closely integrated with advancement functions at the central university, as well. In 2022, Yale University launched a $50 million Endowment Challenge for the Yale School of Public Health. The University committed to matching the funds if YSPH raised $50 million in endowed support by June 30, 2026, with an equivalent investment made into the School’s general endowment. YSPH successfully completed this challenge.
Reporting to the Dean, and serving on the Dean’s executive leadership team, the Chief Advancement Officer leads all advancement functions for the Yale School of Public Health, including fundraising, alumni engagement, and advancement operations. The CAO partners closely with the Dean to align advancement efforts with institutional goals and represents YSPH within university-wide development initiatives. The CAO will play a central role in shaping a forward-looking advancement division that reflects YSPH’s strategic priorities and passion for service to others and the greater good. They will develop and lead the implementation of an innovative advancement strategy; lead meaningful and impactful donor cultivation; broaden and diversify alumni and constituent engagement; lead advancement operations and organizational management; mentor and empower a strong advancement team; and serve as the YSPH spokesperson for advancement and external relations.
The ideal candidate for the role of Chief Advancement Officer will bring a significant record of leadership and achievement in advancement, including demonstrated success leading fundraising strategy and securing principal and major gifts.
