Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.
The Development & Alumni Engagement (DAE) portfolio at UBC joins development (fundraising) and alumni UBC functions under one umbrella. DAE is a one of the leading advancement teams in Canada and has oversight for fundraising and alumni engagement at all UBC campuses and locations, including UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. With over 300 employees, DAE currently raises over $300 million and engages over 100,000 alumni annually.
The UBC Faculty of Science is the top-ranked dedicated science faculty in Canada and among the top five internationally for ecological research in areas such as biodiversity conservation.
We are committed to tackling urgent global crises and advancing knowledge in traditional and emerging fields through research, education and engagement. UBC Science has exceptional strength across many fields of science, including astronomy, materials science, critical materials, ocean sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, organic chemistry, quantum matter, environmental science, biology, AI and data science. Over the last century, UBC Science has laid the foundation for vital research that will solve the current challenges threatening our future.
As Director of Development & Alumni Engagement, you will work closely with the Assistant Dean to help operationalize fundraising strategies that ensure the Faculty's strategic objectives are met. Supporting a multi-year campaign in support of the Faculty of Science, you will manage your own portfolio of leadership-level donors with a $4M fundraising goal, contributing directly to the team's $13M development and alumni engagement program in support of the Faculty's $27M annual goal. You will be responsible for advancing leadership gift account strategies where a high degree of senior administration involvement is required. You will work in partnership with the Assistant Dean, senior University administration, and the Faculty's leadership team to facilitate maximum private sector support and build alumni connections, as well as provide day-to-day leadership and mentorship to a team of career employees.
Requirements
The incoming Director of Development & Alumni Engagement will play a key role in executing the long-term strategy for Development within UBC Science, while personally managing a senior-level fundraising portfolio. The ideal candidate will bring genuine enthusiasm for science education and research, considerable depth of experience as a frontline major gift fundraiser, demonstrated success building meaningful relationships in industry, and strong people-leadership instincts, including a willingness to mentor fundraisers who need process and structure. This person is a dynamic, self-starting leader who is motivated by challenge, energized by collaboration across faculties and units, and driven more by team accomplishment than individual achievement. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to bring both rigour and a sense of fun to the work are necessary.
As UBC advances its most ambitious fundraising and alumni engagement campaign, this is an exciting time to join UBC and build partnerships to advance the mission and vision of the University. FORWARD, the campaign for UBC, will raise $3 billion and activate the power of our global alumni by doubling alumni engagement. The campaign will benefit research, teaching and learning across both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses in three key areas—advancing healthy lives, creating solutions for the planet, and shaping thriving societies.
